Mr. Deaton is also a playwright, writing the libretto for Glen Cortese’s monodrama The Swan Knight, and creating the one-man-show We Lived Only for the Music! Max Lorenz: Hero or Hostage?, which was most recently presented at Madison Lyric Stage, in January 2025, and will make its London theater debut at The Cockpit on April 23, 24, 25 of 2027.
He has also written a number of translations and adaptations including adaptations of Shakespeare’s Scottish Play, Macbeth, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and English translations of Humperdinck’s Opera Hansel und Gretel, Schoenberg’s Erwartung and Poulenc’s La Voix humaine.
Mr. Deaton wrote two new plays in 2020-21: A Memory of Truth? and Elegy of a Fallen Angel, A Memory of Truth was produced in workshop in 2021 and May 2025, and Elegy of a Fallen Angel which was produced in 2023, both with Madison Lyric Stage.
