We Lived Only for the Music! Max Lorenz: Hero or Hostage? created and performed by Wagnerian tenor Marc Deaton, is a gripping spoken play with music that chronicles the perilous double life of legendary German tenor Max Lorenz. Celebrated as the star of the Bayreuth Festival and Adolf Hitler’s favorite singer for his heroic portrayals of Siegfried, Tristan, and Parsifal, Lorenz walked a deadly razor’s edge during the Third Reich due to his Jewish wife and hidden homosexuality. Shielded only by high-level opera connections, his survival came at an immense personal cost. Through dynamic mixed media, this evocative production explores the clash between transcendent art and totalitarian terror, confronting the isolation an artist endures once their utility to power fades. Stepping into Lorenz’s shoes, Deaton weaves a powerful narrative featuring live and recorded operatic excerpts sung by Deaton himself—rather than archival recordings of Lorenz—spanning Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, Siegfried, Lohengrin, and Parsifal, alongside Verdi’s Aïda and Otello, in an unforgettable story of resilience, moral compromise, and the healing power of music.
